Royal College election: Why I’m standing – Shilpa Shah

Candidates can submit statements to Pharmacy Magazine subject to our editorial guidelines. Here: Shilpa Shah.

Many of you will have seen how passionate I am about pharmacy. My purpose in life, I believe, is to make people’s lives better. By having a place on the advisory council, I will be able to influence change and promote innovation to support pharmacy in the future.

Inclusivity is important to me, and this is something I demonstrate in my various roles whether that’s as a CEO of Community Pharmacy North East London or in my voluntary roles. Pharmacy technicians along with other support staff are what make pharmacy. The Royal College of Pharmacy will be bringing people starting with pharmacy technicinas.

The Royal College will give us parity with other HCPs. We must not take for granted the seat at the table that we will then have. In the past I have had seats at tables where my voice has not been heard. Luckily, I’m not shy or quiet and have learnt that I do not need to be aggressive or loud to be heard.

I have learnt that it’s better to listen (a skill I have learnt from my volunteering position at Samaritans) or to be silent. There will be an opportunity to get my point across, but when I do it will be succinct and powerful. That hasn’t come to me naturally it’s something I’ve learnt through my lifetime. I want to use these skills to represent pharmacy in the best way possible.

The last thing I will leave you with is the ask that you vote. If we have the option to vote for anything in life, we should not waste that opportunity so please do vote. You get eight votes (you don’t need to use them all) so have a read of our bios and letters and tick the boxes of the people that resonate for you.
